Given that I'll never get the best price, I have bought a few today.

Hoping or expecting? Not trying to cast doubt, but I badly timed this one and already show a loss of 20% and I have a feeling it may go further.

Yes they are a good buy at P/E 4.8

but during the last credit crunch they were P/E2 so they can go much lower!

From last Production and Interim Management Statement statement to 31st March (released 26th April) :

"Share buy-back programme
In September 2011, the Group announced a share buy-back programme of up to $250 million, the completion of which was subject to market conditions. In the quarter ended 31 March 2012, 2.4 million shares were purchased at a total cost of $36 million. In the period from September 2011 to 31 March 2012 , a total of 8.0 million shares had been purchased a total cost of $114 million, representing 1.5% of the Company’s shares in issue at the commencement of the programme, at an average purchase price of 904 pence per share. The Company’s authority for this share buy-back programme expires on 11 May 2012. The bought back shares are held in treasury."

At the AGM this Friday 11th May, will this authority be extended ?

With continued gold sales to the government, probably highly likely while the main gold mine is still active, while silver inventories are rebuilt further to the repair of the Balkhash precious metals smelter, "which will be completed in Q2 2012".

"Silver sales volumes were above the comparative period of 2011, principally due to the lower production volumes in Q1 2011 as repair work was conducted on the anode furnace at the Balkhash precious metals plant. Sales volumes were below Q4 2011, as the export restriction introduced on sales of precious metals by the Government of Kazakhstan in July 2011, was lifted in September 2011 and silver inventory was sold down in this period.

Gold sales volumes in the first 3 months of 2012 included the sale of 69k oz of gold bar inventory built up in the second half of 2011 due to the export restriction placed on precious metals sales noted above. Sales of gold bar recommenced in March 2012 with the sale of inventory to the National Bank of Kazakhstan. Gold bar sales to the National Bank at market rates will continue on a monthly basis throughout the remainder of 2012."

Good summary blackberry12 with regards to the main copper developments. As for trading and investing, do a bit of both, a trading pot and an investment pot maybe. I also like the fact that KAZ seems to be at the top or bottom (or very close) of the FTSE100 on big general market movement days. Only -5.68% to reach major support at 730p, will it bounce a few per cent up or break through to the downside, no idea, but watching with interest. By WholeWideWorld

well yes. obviously the share price is very volatile (which I quite like), but I'm happy to have the investment for the next 3-5 years, but will try to buy at lows (now) and sell at highs. Just look at the chart. It's close to post credit crunch lows at the moment. Possible highs are at 14 compared to current 7.73. So imho right now it's a buy at these levels. the company resumed buyback at 10 and below, which is a good indicator of value. Their own treasury should have a good idea of intrinsic value.

fundamentals are generally good. mined tonnage will be flat for next 2 years, while the new developments come on line. The new developments will take tonnage from 385 to over 500 and have been financed by the chinese who are the biggest customers. share buyback will have taken about 1.5-2% of shares back in treasury by the time it finishes on the 11th, which will improve eps. Last q1 report was a bit dismal due to bad weather, however production should improve to meet goals. Copper is a key resource and will continue in high demand. Plus it is likely to be in shorter supply in the future, so price should improve. By blackberry12

You've answered your own question - strong cash flow and literally no debt. Add to that they're buying back their own shares. By Decoy

Dear Investors

A question i wish to ask to other members, at its current price KAZ has been hammered over the past two months. it is a company with strong cash flows and literally no debt. in your personal opinions is KAZ a good buy at its current level???

No doubt Citi and JPM will be buying at this price, so they can sell the share back to KAZ for a tidy and very easy profit, IMO By NewKOTB
17:30 04/05/2012 Re: WAIT FOR DOUBLE BOTTOM £7.50
of course it can go lower, but the 7.50 October low is fast approaching, which could be a technical turn. I'm more comfortable buying down here than back in the 900's or 1000's. The company started buying again under 10 so they must see value. We coud see a sharp spring back next week on the back of any positive news event. Also shorters will be watching their positions very closely now and may choose to cover at this point as they've had a good run down from 12 and there may not be deemed too much more to take out. lets see.
